The Project is now focusing on identifying organizational entities within or outside of universities managing Research Infrastructures (RIs).

A RI can be a supercomputer, a telescope, a laboratory or any other resource that is shared among researchers. RIs play an increasingly important role in the advancement of knowledge and technology.

According to an article published on the UNESCO site, the pivotal importance of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), knowledge-sharing and capacity-building for eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable development has recently been confirmed at the Rio+20 Conference and the 2013 ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review. While the benefits of STI for development have received global recognition, access to these benefits remains unequally distributed within and among countries.

According to an article published on Science|Business, in the past decade high performance computing has transformed the practice – and the productivity - of science. Now this analytical power must be opened up to industry, to improve decision-making, spur innovation and boost competitiveness.

Supercomputers may date back to the 1960s, but it is only recently that their vast processing power has begun to be harnessed by industry and commerce, to design safer cars, build quieter aeroplanes, speed up drug discovery, and subdue the volatility of the financial markets.

iSGTW speaks to CERN openlab’s Sverre Jarp, ahead of this month’s inaugural ISC Big Data conference in Heidelberg, Germany. Jarp, who is the general chair of the event, picks his highlights from the conference program and tells us why big data presents exciting opportunities, but also poses challenges, for enterprise and HPC alike.

Perhaps you could start by telling the iSGTW readers a little about the event in your own words…

Louis Papaemmanuel, Project Director of iMENTORS, SU, presented today iMENTORS at the UNESCO HP-BGI meeting

He demonstrated how the iMENTORS platform optimizes donors' ICT4D interventions in Africa. Stream it live: http://bit.ly/tqMX1H

The UNESCO-HP Brain Gain Initiative fosters cooperation across borders among students, academics and scientists from Africa and the Arab States, and helps strengthen research capacities of higher education institutions in the two regions.

It was an opportunity to meet and exchange with partners (representatives from 19 projects, in 14 countries), as well as with stakeholders in the two regions. The activity served as well to highlight the projects' achievements and to reflect together on the way forward.01-graphic.jpg

According to an article published on Primeur Weekly Magazine, Big Data is a rather broad and sometimes confusing area. However, there are some aspects of Big Data on which everyone seems to agree. First, the biggest Big Data can be found in science. Second, HPC and to a lesser extent Cloud computing provide the engines to access and process Big Data. And third, Big Data can provide a good ROI in industry for well chosen applications. Hence, a conference that combines these three aspects, provides a convenient way to absorb the latest developments in Big Data. This is exactly what the ISC Big Data Conference, September 25-26, 2013 in Heidelberg, Germany will do. Being chaired by Sverre Jarp from CERN - one of the largest scientific Big Data producers, and with Felix Wortmann, from Bosch Internet of Things Lab and Intel's Stephan Gillich & Girish Juneja providing keynotes, the conference will start with a solid scientific and industrial foundation. Being part of the ISC family of conferences - with the yearly ISC supercomputing event as its flagship - the new conference provides a deep link into the HPC community.
