How the EU helps on open data research

According to an article published on EPSI Platform website,  EPSI Platform has published a report about the relation of EU funding with open data and PSI initiatives across Europe. The report provides a good overview on what projects and initiatives have been funded by the European Commission during the past years related to the major programmes for research and innovation in Europe (the 7th Framework Programme – FP7 and Competitiveness and Innovation Programme – CIP).

Open data reutilisation needs of the investment in the technologies associated and knowledge on the framework regulations about Public Sector Information. The European Commission is currently supporting projects to promote the use of open data related Information and Communication Technologies at different stages (such us publication, curation, standardisation, application and/or visualisation of the data) and the analysis of different policies across Europe.  Moreover, besides the public benefit which open data brings to society, the creation of commercial products based on open data is one of the challenges, which is now starting to be tackled.

The report shows how the EC has invested an average of around €65m per year in R&D and innovation projects related to open data technologies since 2007

The future opportunities are also analysed from the arrival of the new programmes for 2014 to the pending closure of Future Internet Public-Private Partnership which will be closing the latest FP7 related call in December 2013.

The final amount for Horizon 2020 has just been published (€70b) and COSME initiative will permit the aids to be reaching SMEs and entrepreneurs.

In conclusion, taking into account the past initiatives and the yet-to-come ones, the commitment on data-based actions by the EC has been clear and a constant during the time.
