iMENTORS has identified and recorded 58 submarine cables into and out of the African continent. This amounts to over 450,000 km of cable, and over 150 different organizations involved in the funding and operation of the cables.
The challenge now for Africa is to develop local fiber optic networks to connect these from high-capacity international submarine cables all the way to the home.

According to an article published on isgtw, cientific output is not just about academic papers. Datasets, along with other products of research, such as software and various forms of multimedia, also need to be made citable so that sharing and reuse can be facilitated, as well as tracked. In order to achieve this, these outputs must be given persistent identifiers similar to the digital object identifiers (DOIs) assigned to academic papers. Two weeks ago, the ODIN project held its first-year conference at CERN, with delegates discussing the barriers stakeholder groups encounter and how these could be resolved to enable an interoperable layer of persistent identification on both a European and a global scale.
On 15 October 2013 the Council of PRACE organized a networking reception at the Palais des Academies in Brussels under the motto “HPC @ Horizon2020”. The event also highlighted the publication of the special report “Supercomputers for all” supported by Science|Business. High-level personalities from European politics, national HPC players, science and industry contributed to the presentations and panel discussion.

The collection of data for the iMENTORS database is currently focused on donor databases and international submarine cable networks.
Nearly 2000 organizations involved in ICT projects are already mapped and recorded in the iMENTORS database which launched the beta version in July. Users can easily sign in using their LinkedIn credentials, put their projects on the map and increase their project’s visibility. The aim is for the platform to contain 80 percent of e-infrastructure projects/investment frameworks by the end of the project using an advanced geographic information and visualization system.
iMENTORS (also funded under FP7) has been busy recording the IST-Africa project and related FP7 projects. iMENTORS enables organizations to connect with each other, share resources and link their ICT4D project proposal to the past or on-going projects.
The Project is now focusing on identifying organizational entities within or outside of universities managing Research Infrastructures (RIs).
A RI can be a supercomputer, a telescope, a laboratory or any other resource that is shared among researchers. RIs play an increasingly important role in the advancement of knowledge and technology.
IST-Africa, a project coordinated by the International Management Commission (IIMC) of Ireland, brings together the national ministries or government agencies in 18 African countries responsible for information and communications technology (ICT) or science, technology and innovation (STI) research and policy.
This past week, iMENTORS (also funded under FP7) has been busy recording the IST-Africa project and related FP7 projects.

With the European Union’s new research initiative, Horizon 2020, on the launch pad, we would like to invite you to join a select group of leaders in the research and innovation community to debate questions of values and ethics in science - and together, draft a new Charter for European Research.
According to an article published on Quartz, a group of Belgian researchers has come up with a novel way (pdf) of mapping the distribution of wealth in Côte d’Ivoire—by looking at purchases of mobile airtime minutes.
iMENTORS has been busy recording and mapping information on all participating entities and the connections between them. ERAfrica is a new entry!
ERAfrica is an EU-funded project with the ambition of creating a "European Research Area Network" for the African continent.
According to an article published on VENTURES AFRICA, Sub-Saharan Africa has witnessed dramatic growth in ICT access the past few years – and whilst being the fastest growing region for e-infrastructure development, lack of accurate knowledge on past and current development projects creates uncertainties that hamper the effectiveness of investments.
Athina Vrakatseli, project Dissemination and Sustainability leader, demonstrated how the iMENTORS platform optimizes donors' ICT4D interventions in Africa during the training and final meeting that EuroRIs-Net+ organised on 16-17 September, in Athens. Click here to see the presentation

The UNESCO-HP Brain Gain Initiative fosters cooperation across borders among students, academics and scientists from Africa and the Arab States, and helps strengthen research capacities of higher education institutions in the two regions.
It was an opportunity to meet and exchange with partners (representatives from 19 projects, in 14 countries), as well as with stakeholders in the two regions. The activity served as well to highlight the projects' achievements and to reflect together on the way forward.
According to an article published on iSGTW, this month sees the launch of an exciting new conference series from ISC Events. The inaugural ISC Big Data conference is set to take place on 25-26 September in Heidelberg, Germany.
The event has the tagline 'Where Enterprise and HPC meet' and will be chaired by Sverre Jarp, who is chief technology officer of CERN openlab, a unique public-private partnership involving a host of major ICT companies. Watch out for in-depth interview with Jarp in the 18 September issue of iSGTW.
