Impressions of Day 1 of EDF2013

The first day of the European Data Forum 2013 (EDF2013) took place on 09 April 2013 at the Croke Park Conference Center in Dublin, Ireland. Starting at 09.00am the event programme was full of great keynotes and presentations, an executive panel on big data with 6 participants took place as well as tutorials and lots of discussions and networking around European data economy issues.

The event was opened by the 2 general EDF2013 conference chairs Elena Simperl (University of Southampton, UK) and Michael Hausenblas (DERI Galway, Ireland) together with Marta Nagy-Rothengass, Head of Unit "Data Value Chain" at European Commission, Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology.

After a Video message by Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission, in charge of the Digital Agenda, there were welcome words to EDF2013 by Roberto Viola, Deputy Director General at European Commission, Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology, Prof. Mark Ferguson, Science Foundation Ireland, and Minister Alan Shatter, Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence of Ireland.

Africa-EU Joint Task Force meeting

The 15th Africa-EU Joint Task Force meeting was held to review the 8 Partnership areas of the Joint Africa-Europe Strategy (JAES), including Priority 8 for Science, Information Society and Space. The aim of the meeting was to assess recent progress and agree on priorities for 2013 in each area.

For Priority 8 it was acknowledged that progress had been made but that more could be achieved. A number of areas for enhanced collaboration were identified and will be developed, such as continuing the successful EU-supported AU Research Grants and the Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Awards programmes, as well as helping build Africa’s capacities, such as the Pan African Intellectual Property Organisation (PAIPO) and the African Observatory for STI (AOSTI).

The Research Data Alliance Launch and First Plenary took place in Göteborg from 18th to 20th March 2013

At its first Plenary, the RDA was launched by sponsors from the European Commission, the U. S. Government and the Australian Government and leaders in the data community. The Plenary was a working meeting to accelerate discussion, Working and Interest Group interaction, and data community development.

The Research Data Alliance Launch and First Plenary was live streamed on the iCORDI web channel .

On March 6th 2013 ERINA+ will hold its Final Workshop on the project’s findings and results in Brussels, linked to the 10th eConcertation meeting (6th and 7th March 2013).

After the offered welcome coffee (from 10:00 to 10:30 am), the Workshop will be from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, after which a lunch buffet will be offered, while waiting for the eConcertation meeting to start (13:30 pm).

This will be an opportunity to present the ERINA+ Methodology for impact assessment of e-Infrastructure Projects and ERINA+ assessment tools (for the new comers), as well as the lessons learned, achievements and ERINA+ recommendations.

Expo Summit Africa closed on the 14th February 2013 after a successful line up of international and local speakers. Over 90 delegates attended the two day conference, and many of these delegates were international guests.

Mati Nyazema, Executive Director, Sandton Convention Centre moderated the two days. The Summit was opened by the Gauteng and Johannesberg Convention Bureau.

ICT4D Drinks & Networking

London ICT4D Meetup is an informal networking opportunity for people with an interest in the use of Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D).

Regular attendees include folk from international development agencies, CrisisCommons, FrontlineSMS, IT journalists, ICT4D academics and various 'geeks with critiques'.

This is an open group which anyone is welcome to join and we actively seek to include new members from the Crisis Mapping community, the Standby Volunteer Task Force, Apps4Good, Open Street Map, MapAction, Ushahidi, Sahana and any other ICT4D initiatives.

Events are held once a month, nominally on the last Tuesday, although we try to synch with other events happening in town.

The 2013 International Conference on Information Technology for Africa to be held in Zimbabwe from February 20 to 23 will look at ways to transfer, diffuse and adopt ICTs within the African context, a Cabinet Minister has said. Minister of Information Communication Technology Nelson Chamisa said in an interview today that preparations for the conference were at an advanced stage.

Nokia, Microsoft, Dalberg organized Innovation for Vision 20:2020 Forum to boost Nigeria’s economy and to stimulate discussion about the role of ICT’s and innovation in catalyzing development
 
Global phone manufacturer, Nokia in partnership with leading Software maker, Microsoft and Dalberg Global Development Advisors organized a full day forum to discuss ways the ICT sector can impact agriculture, job creation and the power sector in achieving Nigeria’s Vision 20:2020 goals.
The forum tagged, ‘Innovation for Vision 20:2020 Forum’ stimulated discussion around how information and communication technologies and local innovations can be used for improving the performance of the agriculture, entrepreneurial and energy sectors and what barriers exist for unleashing creativity both within public and private domains for making these solutions a reality. Microsoft’s General Manager for Nigeria Emmanuel Onyeje pointed out that “it is important to build our understanding and knowledge about the power of ICT’s, but only action will allow us to reach our dreams. We need to move from policies to actionable programs that benefit the people.”.

AITEC Africa and the E-Payment Providers Association of Nigeria (E-PPAN) have announced a partnership agreement for E-PPAN to be the Host Country Partner for the sixth annual AITEC Banking & Mobile Money West Africa conference, to be held in Lagos over 13-14 March.

The conference will be held at the Eko Hotel, Lagos, over 13-14 March and will have over 60 local and international experts as speakers, panellists and trainers covering a wide range of topics in bank management systems, mobile money, financial inclusion, agent banking, card systems and processing and all aspects of commercial banking.
